Plant Features

Bear's paw fern (Polypodium aureum "Mandianum"), also known as a hare's foot fern, grows arching blue-green fronds with wavy edges. The fern is named for the fur-like rhizomes that form at the base of the fronds. The plant is native to tropical regions and hardy in Sunset's Climate Zones H1, H2, 15 through 17 and 19 through 24. The frost-tender fern is suitable as a houseplant or patio accent, as the fronds grow up to 4 feet wide and drape beautifully over a hanging basket. The bear's paw requires indirect sunlight to partial shade and well-drained soil.

Growing Instructions

Sunlight

Ferns prefer indirect sunlight and do best in a north-facing window, as a south-facing window can be too bright and scald the fronds.Place the fern in a room or on the patio that maintains a temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, making sure the plant receives indirect sunlight, filtered sun or partial shade.

Humidity

The bear's paw fern is a tropical plant and thrives in humid conditions. For patio plants, mist the leaves of the plant with water daily if your area has low humidity. If you grow it indoors, use a humidifier or place the pot on a tray lined with pebbles or marbles. Fill the tray with water, making sure the water does not touch the bottom of the pot.

Water

Keep the fern's soil moist, but not soggy and do not allow the soil to dry out. In winter, only water when soil feels dry to the touch, but you may need to water more frequently in warmer weather.

Fertilizer

The bear's paw, like other ferns, actively grows from April though September. During this time, fertilize the plant about every two weeks using a balanced fertilizer. Fertilize about once a month if the plant is actively growing in the winter. Repot the fern as it outgrows its current container.
